Why do "Americans" use their free time self-indulgently in computer games, watching movies, taking a trip, getting a hair do, and so on?
Mayby because society is a cybernetic cell, so that when one organelle isn't working, it should be dormant, turn-off and stay out of the way of the working parts?
This efficiency of off-work dormancy creates the pass-times and sit-calms which are the main activities of "Americans" when they are not working.
Situationist Internationale remarks that in fact leisure is not really free-time but a commodity sold back to a consumer.
Veblen in TLC suggests that contemporary social structure is a continuation of tribal period structure and that the lords are primarily symbols, they engage in inert activities.

I am an American, but that does not mean I do what the majority does.

Whether a burka or a bikini, it is the very same game --
And then there are men: the shiest and most sexually repressed creature of all with their current fashion of knee-length shorts where just twenty-years ago men wore short shorts, or the hipster males' dread of the speedo swimsuit.

1984 was actually a story of the struggle for sexual freedom (Winston and Julia): every cultural revolution is first of all a free-love movement, and every dictatorship is first of all a regime of sexual repression.
"If desire is repressed, it is because every position of desire, no matter how small, is capable of calling into question the established order of a society: not that desire is asocial, on the contrary. But it is explosive; there is no desiring-machine capable of being assembled without demolishing entire social sectors. Despite what some revolutionaries think about this, desire is revolutionary in its essence ... and no society can tolerate a position of real desire without its structures of exploitation, servitude, and hierarchy being compromised."

ha!
maybe the entire euro-centric thought machine needs a thorough overhaul?
see the subversive undercurrents merging with a decadent mainstream?
